Greenwich
This was a Coach Trip organised by Margaret Carroll, involving the Photographic Group and members from some other of our U3A groups. An excellent journey found us at our destination in record time. On arrival at the World Heritage Site, which includes The National Maritime Museum, The Cutty Sark, The Royal Observatory and the Queen`s House we all dispersed to our chosen destinations.
THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM opened by George V1 in 1937 is a museum all about the maritime history of Britain at sea. The most important collection in the world.
THE CUTTY SARK was close at hand and looking spectacular. Her first voyage was in February 1870 to Shanghai, returning with a cargo of tea. It was the fastest ship of it`s day, and now is the sole surviving tea clipper.
THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY was built in 1676, designed by Christopher Wren. The Greenwich Meridian was chosen as the Prime Meridian of the world in 1884. It marks the divide between East and West.
THE QUEEN`S HOUSE was built in 1619 designed by Inigo Jones, and has an internationally renowned art collection.
THE PAINTED HALL at the Royal Naval College was chosen by some, in fact they spent the whole day there! Designed by Christopher Wren it`s known as Britain`s Sistine Chapel. Recently re-opened earlier this year after a £8.5 million makeover.
Our Thanks go to Margaret for a wonderful day out, with too much to see all in one day, so further visits recommended!
